It was my 60th birthday on May 2nd. I kinda put Greg on notice that I would like him to organise something, as usually it is me who organises not only his significant celebrations but mine also. I knew he had organised some travel plans but I did not know any details. Two weeks before my actual birthday we had a gathering at home where, as usual, I had organised the food and drinks etc. and he had done the inviting! It was a lovely night but there was still no mention of where we were going and nobody would even confirm that we were going any time soon.
The Monday after the party he told me we were off to New Zealand, but didn’t specify Wanaka, as we had been talking about going to Auckland. Anyway, I packed and we usually leave from Gold Coast airport so on the Friday we set off and he said let’s have lunch at Kirra Surf Club before checking in to Wyndham there for the night. We had just got our lunch when in walked three of our dearest friends, Stephen and Leslie-Anne and Kay, who we have known since our school days, shortly followed by my younger sister Mandy who lives at Airlie Beach. My other sister had been at the party at home but obviously Mandy had not. So the surprises kept on coming and I was told we were going to Wanaka, which is one of my favourite destinations.
We’ve found our new favourite annual holiday destination at Wyndham Wanaka. My parents graciously gifted us with 5 nights accommodation for the 9 of us so we could take the kids to see the snow for the first time.
We were amazed by the beauty of New Zealand and especially the stunning Lake Wanaka.
We recently celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary by leaving the 6 children with their Nan, and driving around the South Island of New Zealand for 10 days.
We flew into Christchurch, and then took the Tranz Alpine Express to the West Coast, where we hired a car and made our way down the South Coast, stopping to enjoy the beauty of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers along the way.
We spent most of our time at Wyndham Wanaka and found the staff there to be very friendly.
Recently, Ben and his girlfriend Rosie stayed at Wyndham Resort Wanaka as a guest of an Owner. ‘Being a photographer, the highlight of the trip was the super clear nights for night photography – and Amisfield Winery in Queenstown.’‘The Resort was brilliant. I spent most mornings in the exercise room. Our room was well appointed and all the staff I dealt with were professional and very friendly’. We’re glad you enjoyed your stay Ben – and the photos are stunning!
It’s been a long 39 years since we toured the North and South Islands of New Zealand. Back in 1975 we were in our last year of High School and were part of a tour group of 30 people. Previously we had stayed in Queenstown and toured the Otago area in a coach. We vividly remember the rugged snow capped peaks and beautiful lakes and striking scenery.
Fast forward to July 2014. We flew from Sydney directly into Queenstown International Airport for a ten-day winter holiday. After picking up our 4WD hire car we drove in fading daylight over the snow covered Crown Range to the Wyndham resort in Wanaka. Continue reading →
