20th Wedding Anniversary in Wanaka, NZ

We recently celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary by leaving the 6 children with their Nan, and driving around the South Island of New Zealand for 10 days.

We flew into Christchurch, and then took the Tranz Alpine Express to the West Coast, where we hired a car and made our way down the South Coast, stopping to enjoy the beauty of Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers along the way.

We spent most of our time at Wyndham Wanaka and found the staff there to be very friendly.

The above photo of Lake Hawea was taken as we approached Wanaka from the West Coast. There were so many amazing photo stops on this drive. We felt like little children again as we laughed and kept stopping to take photos.

We came back relaxed and regenerated after this holiday, the longest time we have had alone together in nearly 16 years.

    • Hi Melynda, I thought I’d jump in with some info, as the original Owners who submitted this story may not be tracking comments. The train journey from Christchurch to Greymouth takes about 4.5 hours, and you can find more info here: http://www.kiwirailscenic.co.nz/tranzalpine/. There are quite a few different car hire companies at Greymouth Railway Station, and you can pre-book your car hire online). Enjoy your holiday! Cheers, Ilona

  1. Last December, hubby and I retired from the school we both worked at in Queensland. He had been teaching for 48 years so deserved a holiday. So between that day and Xmas, we spent 2 glorious weeks in New Zealand basing ourselves at Rotorua for week one to explore the Nth Island and at Wanaka for week two to explore the South.

We had been to Rotorua before so we travelled far and wide from the Wyndham resort which is situated on the northern end of Lake Rotorua. We even did the Hobbiton dinner adventure which we thoroughly enjoyed!! At the end of a fun filled week, we drove down to Wellington and then flew to Queenstown to pick up another car to explore the South.

We did LOVE Wanaka, the lake is magnificent, the town is pretty and the surrounds are truly awesome, having never been there before. Yes……and the Wyndham resort was very good too with a fun family pool for the kids to splash around in.

We drove over the range to Queenstown quite regularly to do day trips and found the tourist town very BUSY!! But the countryside of the South is mind blowing and breathtaking all in one!! In every direction, around every corner, there is another stunning photographic opportunity. A MUST to go and see!!

Finally we drove to Dunedin for a night and on up to Christchurch to see this sad earthquake city before flying home for Xmas. Truly a wonderful fortnight.
