“Wanaka’s Scenery is Spectacular!”

Before we had children, my husband and I travelled quite a bit around the world (Europe, South America, Africa, Asia, North America). New Zealand was always on our bucket list, however because it was just “next door” we thought it was something we could always do later in life.

We finally went in January 2015 with our 7 and 10 year old children, and wondered what took us so long!! The scenery is spectacular and compares to the Rocky Mountains in Canada.

Mt Cook, New Zealand

Mt Cook, New Zealand

We spent 6 days in Wyndham Wanaka resort. Being only one hour drive from Queenstown meant we could easily go there on day trips, and the drive is so impressive that it is not a punishment to drive up a few times. There was heaps to do around Wanaka as well. The kids loved Puzzling World and the National Transport & Toy Museum.

The swimming pool and water slide at the resort was a bit hit with the kids. Going in summer meant that it was daylight until about 10pm at night. So we could easily visit places during the day, and there was still plenty of daylight to swim in the pool in the evening. The outdoor BBQ meant the kids just had to pop out of the pool to have dinner.

We also went to Mt. Cook which is just a few hours drive from Wanaka. The scenery on the way was incredible. We spent the night at one of the Chalets at the foot of Mt. Cook.

We spent 2 nights in Te Anau. From there you can drive to Milford Sound. All I can say about the drive there is WOW! We were lucky that we had a sunny day when we went on the cruise since we were told it rains most days of the year. We also went to Glenorchy, which is a short drive from Queenstown. Another incredible drive.

So if you have always thought about going to NZ, but haven’t got around to it yet, go soon, you will not regret it.
