Time is one of those funny things that creep up on you. Before you know it, the first of your children have moved away from home and your youngest is about to begin their final year of high school. So to celebrate our 21st wedding anniversary, my wife and I after 9 years of WorldMark Ownership took the family on our first trip overseas, spending 12 nights in amazing Rotorua, New Zealand. Holidays have changed a lot from the days where a bucket and spade would keep our two children occupied for an entire day at the beach. Thankfully the friendly staff at WorldMark Resort Rotorua lined us up with activities that would entertain our two teenagers while still giving Mum and Dad some time to relax and unwind.
While the peaceful canal-side apartments were enough to keep Mum and Dad relaxed while taking in the afternoon views across Lake Rotorua, our kids had other ideas when it came to filling in 12 days in Rotorua. There was the Wai-O-Tapu thermal wonderland where we saw the Lady Knox Geyser erupt before taking our time to stroll through a truly spectacular volcanic landscape. The Mitai Maori Village where a traditional hangi meal and cultural show provided an evening that will live long in all our memories. Having a hire car for our stay meant we were able to make the comfortable 90 minute drive to provide our teenagers with one of the highlights of their trip to NZ, a visit to the Hobbiton movie set only weeks before the second Hobbit movie was released in cinemas. We also stumbled upon Rotorua’s newest tourist attraction, Railcruising, where we travelled 19kms along a section of the former Rotorua Railway Line in self-drive railcars. The grin on my 17 year old’s face was just as big as the 70 year old couple who arrived behind us, proving this truly was something for people of all ages.
And of course the perfect end to our holiday came at Rotorua’s Skyline. A trip to the top of Mt Ngongotaha left the kids to spend the afternoon riding the luge, Mum and Dad to enjoy some wine tasting at the Volcanic Hills Winery and the evening for us to come together and enjoy the best buffet dinner we have ever had. All while enjoying the spectacular night time views over Rotorua. The only problem was, like all good holidays they must come to an end. Now where shall we go next year?
