Cairns – We will be back!

We are a family of 4 which includes 2 teenage boys.  We were looking for somewhere to go where we hadn’t been before and decided on Cairns after looking through the WorldMark Resort Guide.

We booked a 7-night stay and arrived on a Sunday afternoon.  After picking up our car at the airport we drove out to the Resort.  Wow!  What a beautiful place.  We arrived at Reception and checked in and were given lots of brochures and helpful advice and suggestions from the front desk.

We went up to our apartment which was on the top floor and overlooked the fantastic lagoon-style pool surrounded by tropical plants and palms, with a great spa at one end.  The boys loved the spa!  The rest of the day was spent just checking things out around the Resort and getting our bearings.

Our first full day was spent in Cairns checking out the city itself, the boat harbour, swimming pool in the centre of town and the Barron Gorge, and we booked our tours out to the Great Barrier Reef and the Kuranda Skyrail and Scenic Railway for later in the week.

On the Tuesday we took a drive up to Port Douglas and stopped along the way when we saw a group of people setting up to do some hang-gliding.  That was fun to watch.  When we got to Port Douglas we took a walk around the main street and then we went on a cruise along the Daintree River.  That was fun and scary at the same time as we saw some crocodiles sunbaking on the banks.  We ended the day by having dinner at the Pub in Port Douglas after running into some friends.

The following day saw us driving down South to visit Paronella Park which are Spanish Castle ruins.  We liked it so much we did an afternoon tour and then went back to do a night tour – I highly recommend doing both.

Thursday was our trip out to the Great Barrier Reef for some snorkelling.  This was the highlight of our trip for me.  In the morning we all loaded onto our cruiser ready for a great day.  We were given morning tea on the way out which took about 1 & 1/2 hrs.  When we arrived we sided up to our spot and were let off to get into our life jackets and snorkelling gear.  I unfortunately had lost all my confidence once I hit the water and had to retreat but Brett, Callum & Darcy had the time of their lives! They didn’t want to get out of the water.

After I had a couple of trips on the glass-bottomed boat and the underwater viewing vessel I was happy that lunch was then ready and the boys came in from the water.  We had a lovely lunch supplied to us with heaps of options.  After lunch the boys did some more snorkelling and then came in for their turns on the other boats.  On our return trip back to Cairns we had afternoon tea supplied and then we were able to view all the photos that had been taken professionally and were able to purchase any that we wanted.  I bought all of them I think.

On Friday we had our trip on the Kuranda SkyRail up to Kuranda.  How fantastic to be way above the trees where you can see for miles.  You can get off at stops along the way and then just jump back on to keep going.  When arriving at Kuranda it’s a lovely tourist town with heaps of things to do.  Callum wanted to go into the Snake House with snakes and spiders and the likes – Yuk – but I went with him anyway and then he had his photo taken with a snake wrapped around his neck (aaarrrggghhh)!!

For the return trip back to Cairns we came back down on the Scenic Railway.  It was nice to just sit, relax and take in the scenery on the way down.

On our last day we spent it just relaxing around the Resort.  It was nice to spend the day sitting by the glorious pool, swimming, sunbaking, having lunch and pretty much doing nothing.  For our last dinner that night we went into Cairns and had a lovely Thai meal.

This would have to be one of the greatest holidays I have had in a long while.  We were sad that it was coming to an end as we all agreed that we could have spent a longer time there and would have found plenty more to do.  I was even surprised that for 2 teenage boys to be on holidays with “Mum & Dad” that they didn’t complain once about having to go out each day!
