Lost in NZ; 3 beating hearts

Born in New Zealand and wanting to visit her place of birth, we booked an 18 day trip to take our mother/mother-in-law for a long awaited holiday to Christchurch as well as a number of other places around both the South and North Islands.

Our trip included a very diverse range of places, car hire, external and internal plane flights. Normally booking all of this would have been a nightmare but with the expertise of the Travel Club, Wyndham and RCI it couldn’t have been easier. Special requirements that suited out timeline were handled with patience and care. When circumstances changed and mum couldn’t come we decided to take our granddaughter.  The staff in the Travel Club handled these changes so well and so quickly it was amazing!!!

We travelled from our home to Brisbane, flew to Christchurch where we were picked up by the car company and directed to the hotel (even though it was very late at night and pouring with rain).

After 5 days in Christchurch, stunning Akaroa, Lyttleton Harbour, Hanmer Springs, Kaikoura and local sights we drovevia Lake Tekapo to Mt Cook for a night and then down to something close to heaven, a place called Wanaka via many of the sights where the “Lord of the Rings” film was made.

Using Wanaka as our base we explored the surrounds including Arrowtown and Queenstown.  A very full day with a very early start saw us travel to Queenstown to meet the bus tour to Milford Sound (booked by staff at the Wanaka resort).  Most meals on trips like this fade into memory but there was one stop at Te Anau that lives on in our memory. The taste of the Venison pies was so good they are hard to describe.

A couple of days later (leaving our hearts in Wanaka and the South Island) we flew from Queenstown to Auckland, picked up our next (booked) car and drove to the Bay of Islands for a few days.  Back to Auckland as our base for excursions and a trip to Rotorua before returning to our unit in Auckland to explore the town, Sky Tower and the historic Victoria markets.

The next day with a suitcase full of memories and even more heavy hearts we flew home to Australia and a longing to return as soon as possible.

Frankly, New Zealand is so incredible, particularly the Wanaka/Queenstown area that it is hard to describe, in words, the awesome and breathtaking scenery.  For that reason we took literally hundreds of photos each day and for that reason I have now purchased a 1G portable hard drive to save these memories that will live on forever!!  There are so many that I could make a movie.  We saw so much but in many ways we only scratched the surface.  Frankly, I don’t think that the beauty of NZ is really promoted as well as it could be.

If you have ever considered going DO IT SOON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(What was even harder was picking out the photos to include in this letter)
